Mikhail Vrubel

During my visit with Silvia Dimitrova I asked if there were any artist that influenced her work that could possibly help me. One artist that she was very interested in showing me was Mikhail Vrubel. Who used to work as a religious icon artist but then started to move onto his own style of work but with the same characteristics of icons.
The reason why this artist stuck out so much to Silvia for me was when i was describing the story of my film. That i was keen on having the story in the same concept of the brothers Grimm. With Mikhail's work its very much fantasy and mystic. it would be a brilliant reference for my concept pieces. the main image that stuck in my head was this painting which would be amazing to use the same power and energy for when Annette and Leo first come across Nix the water spirit.

Here are a few more images from Mikhail Vrubel that have really influenced me.
Notice the folds of fabric and angles of the characters bodies and how close the are to the icon paintings. Aswell as looking at the faces how similar they are to the rounded flat icon faces.
The colours aswell present a dark moody effect but not scary.
