Meeting Roy Steadman - A figurative artisit

Last week (28.01.13) we were invited to visite an artist based in Truro who specilises in figurative drawings. Roy has a small studio in the center of town and we were allowed to view his work and talk about his techniques and any advise towards this project.

We arrived and were welcomed by Roy who was half way through drawing one of his pieces. His studio was small but crammed with beautiful drawings, everywere you looked there was a form of art, It was a bit like a little hide away inwhich Roy could be surrounded by his art and be left to do as he pleased.

Roy introduced himself as we did and then told us about all of his work and showed us endless sketchbooks and odd papers covered in scriblles and delicate figures.

Roy attends a fair amount of life drawing classes and also gets invited to the warm up sessions for dance companies to sit down and draw them.
Roy's work has a fair amount of variation from still drawigns were he concentrated on the structure of the figure to rough outlines with the odd out line of a figure. It is as if the dancer has moved across the paper and smudeged it as it went along, to show the speed and movement of the dance sequence.

Roy's technique is mostly based within charcoal and sometimes mixing it with water and ink....which is perfect as thats the main material that we will be using!

Roy even agreed to help us with the look and movement of our 2D section and give us advise in how we could make it better and more dynamic.

We have even been invited to go with him to a dance companies (rambert) warm up session in truro (hall for cornwall)

Her we will be able to draw figures in movement depicted through Roys skills.
