Group work - researching art styles.

Ok so for the new idea of a man in the supermarket collecting stuff for his missus we had the idea to have him as a sort of puppet/mechanical like character. because when he chases after the girl he cuts free from the strings that hold him.

I instantly thought of gorillaz as a small part towards the art design for this project, the characters are incredibly mechanical and puppet like character design wise but when they are animated they are mostly very fluid. which i think could be a very interesting take for when he escapes from his strings.

Here is a animatic from the gorillaz recent album. sadly they werent able to create this music video due to lack of money (it was all spent on the stylo music video)
But the reason why i chose this is because it concentrates a lot on the characters facial features excellently. i like the thought of having thick bold lines and a lot of angles and curves mixed together. very comic book illustration style.
This would mostly go towards the design of the back ground and maybe have some aspect towards the character design.

The animation that we plan on doing will be quite dark but humorous which is very much in the style of Jamie hewlett the creator of the characters for gorillaz.

Here are a few cuts from this animation that i found pretty influential.

This one because of the use of lines to indicate movement and its appealing to the eye. which is what we want our audience to feel when they watch this.

I also chose this frames to help me think about the character design and use of shapes for the faces and bodies. They dont seem real but they have a sort of mechanic feel to them which is what im looking for. either that or their a bit zombied which is also a good reference for the puppet effect.

Heres a frame that shows a sort of quick sketch of the back ground. personally i like it like this, and it looks like it has plenty of influencial aspects towards it. It is a big miss from the origional story of the office worker because we were thinking about having a sort of padignton bear back ground feel to it.
But it could a interesting combination to experiment with.....
